Major central government schemes


# Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) - Rs. 24,000 cr


Being implemented since 2000. Proposals for 4,20,637 km of roads have been cleared. `84,731 crore were released up to March 2011 against the sanctioned Rs 1,18,949 crore.

goal:

The goal was to provide roads to all villages 
(1) with a population of 1000 persons and above by 2003,
 (2) with a population of 500 persons and above by 2007,
 (3) in hill states, tribal and desert area villages with a population of 500 persons and above by 2003, and
 (4) in hill states, tribal and desert area villages with a population of 250 persons and above by 2007.

# Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MMS)- Rs. 11,937 cr


The largest noon meal scheme in the world fed 10.46 crore children of primary and upper primary classes in 11.92 lakh schools as on January 30, 2012.

goal:
It seeks to address issues of food security, lack of nutrition and access to education on a "pan nation"(nation on the basis of a ‘‘cluster’’ of cultures and ethnic groups) scale


# Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan(SSA) - Rs. 25,555 cr


The largest scheme for delivering elementary education. Rs 21,000 crore—65 per cent of the total allocation—was designated in in FY 2011-12, up from Rs 7,166 crore in FY 2005-06.

goal:
It aimed at the universalization of elementary education "in a time bound manner", as mandated by the 86th amendment to the Constitution of India making free and compulsory education to children of ages 6–14 (estimated to be 205 million in number in 2001) a fundamental right.


# Total Sanitation Campaign(TSC) - Rs. 3,500 cr


initiated by Government of India in 1999

goal:
Over 626 million Indians do not have access to toilets. The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan or Total Sanitation Campaign would attempt to put an end to open defecation (the elimination of fecal waste through the anus) within the next decade(by 2017).

# National Rural Health Mission(NRHM) - Rs. 20,822 cr


The government proposes to convert the scheme into a National Health Mission to provide healthcare to the urban poor too under the 12th Plan.

goal:
It is a health program for improving health care delivery across rural India. The scheme proposes a number of new mechanism for healthcare delivery including training local residents as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA),and the Janani Surakshay Yojana (motherhood protection program). It also aims at improving hygiene and sanitation infrastructure.


# MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme)

Rs. 33,000 cr


As of July 2012, 5.50 cr families, or one in four rural households, were provided over 250 crore person-days of work.It is world's largest welfare program, run by the Government of India.It was enacted by legislation on 25 August 2005.

goal:
It is a job guarantee scheme for rural Indians. The scheme provides a legal guarantee for at least 100 days of paid employment in every financial year to adult members of any household willing to do unskilled manual work related to public work at the statutory minimum wage of INR120 (US$1.80) per day in 2009 prices.


# Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS)- Rs. 15,850 cr


It’s one of the world’s largest and most unique programmes for early childhood development. There were 972.49 lakh beneficiaries during 2011-12.

goal:
It is a social welfare scheme to tackle malnutrition and health problems in children below 6 years of age and their mothers. The main beneficiaries of the programme were aimed to be the girl child up to her adolescence, all children below 6 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers. The gender promotion of the girl child by trying to bring her at par with the male child is a key component of the scheme.


# National Rural Drinking Water Programme - Rs. 14,000 cr


As of Feb 2012, of about 16.6 lakh rural habitations, 12.7 lakh were covered fully—77% of the habitations have 40 litre per capita per day. The mission, initially mooted for 7 years (2005-2012), is run by the Ministry of Health.

This programme was launched after merging the three erstwhile programmes on:

 1.Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme-ARWSP
 2.Swajaldhara
 3.National Rural Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance.

goal:
It is a flagship programme of the Government and a component of the Bharat Nirman with the objective of ensuring provision of safe and adequate drinking water supply through handpumps, piped water supply etc. to all rural areas, households and persons.


# National Social Assistance Programme(NSAP) - Rs. 8,447 cr


it is a flagship welfare program of the Government of India initiated on 15 August 1995.

goal:
Aims at ensuring minimum national standard for social assistance in addition to the benefits that states are providing or might provide in future.It directs the State to provide public assistance to its citizens in case of unemployment, old age, sickness and disablement and in other cases of undeserved want within the limit of its economic capacity and development.

# JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) - Rs. 62,253 cr


As on June 30, 2012, 554 projects were sanctioned. It was launched in 2005 for a seven-year period (up to March 2012) to encourage cities to initiate steps for bringing phased improvements in their civic service levels. The government has extended the tenure of the mission for two years, i.e., from April 2012 to March 31, 2014.

goal:

It is a programme meant to improve the quality of life and infrastructure in the cities. It aims at creating ‘economically productive, efficient, equitable and responsive Cities’ by a strategy of upgrading the social and economic infrastructure in cities, provision of Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP) and wide-ranging urban sector reforms to strengthen municipal governance in accordance with the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992.

# Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana(RKVY) - Rs. 9,217 cr


launched in August 2007 as a part of the 11th Five Year Plan by the Government of India. Launched under the aegis of the National Development Council.Total number of projects completed till 2012-2013 is 5,768.

goal:
Aims at achieving 4% annual growth in the agriculture sector through development of Agriculture and its allied sectors (as defined by the Planning Commission (India)) during the period under the 11th Five Year Plan


# Indira Awas Yojana (IAY)- Rs. 11,000 cr


In Aug 2012, a hike was announced in allocation of grants for construction of houses from `45,000 to `75,000 per dwelling unit. The hike will take effect on April 1, 2013.

goal:
It is a social welfare programme to provide housing for the rural poor in India
It is one of the major flagship programs of the Rural Development Ministry to construct houses for BPL(below poverty line) population in the villages. Under the scheme, financial assistance worth Rs.70000/- in plain areas and Rs.75000/- in difficult areas (high land area) is provided for construction of houses. The houses are allotted in the name of the woman or jointly between husband and wife.


# Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) - Rs. 1,096.7 cr


It is literally "National Health Insurance Programme".The scheme started enrolling on April 1, 2008 and has been implemented in 25 states of India.A total of 23 million families have been enrolled as of February 2011. The RSBY is a project under the Ministry of Labour and Employment

goal:
health insurance scheme for the Indian poor. It provides for cashless insurance for hospitalisation in public as well private hospitals

# Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana - Rs. 4,900 cr


In 2011-12, electrification of 7,934 villages has been completed and 34.44 lakh BPL connections provided.

goal:
is a scheme for creating rural electricity infrastructure and completing household electrification and modernization. Users can get information about electrified villages, launch of the scheme and its various objectives etc. Information about the franchise system, monitoring system, village covered under the scheme and implementing agencies etc. Reports on the progress of the work done under this scheme are also available.
